Curriculum
The Garden of Hope aligns with Kenya’s Early childhood education guidelines, ensuring that it offers adequate and suitable content for our young learners. This system is designed to support Kenya’s education framework which follows the 8-4-4 curriculum. This curriculum is structured to provide 8 years of primary education, followed by 4 years of secondary education and 4 years of university education. However, despite the well structured plan, the Kenyan government familied to recognize the significant challenges the lower class face with accessing and completing their education. Financial instability is one of the leading causes with 38% of the population being below or at the poverty line. Therefore a significant amount of families struggle to afford the new financial responsibility associated with secondary and higher level education. In addition to financial difficulties, nutritional instability further amplifies this problem. Poor nutrition negatively impacts a Childs ability to focus and perform well in school, leading to lower adamic achievement and increases dropout rates; therefore, continuing the cycle of familial poverty. Transportation plays another role as inadequate or inaccessible transportation blocks children from being able to regularly attend school. As a result of these challenges, a significant number of children from poor Kenyan households are unable to complete their education. Studies revealed the 9/10 children of poor households drop out before eighth grade. However at The Garden of Hope we aim to combat these disparities among our community through our various programs including our Nursery School and Nutrition Program.
Our Nursery School consists of mainly orphaned and kindergarten students as school starts at first grade. At our Nursery school we follow East Africa’s Early year Education guidelines, which cover basic reading and writing skills and entry level mathematics. Our language skills department is primarily composed of basic listening and speaking skills. Which includes: common greetings, follow up inquires, active listening excersies, auditory memory, etc. At the Garden of Hope we believe in using peer exercises and active conversations to teach basic concepts. Therefore promoting a engaged environment where our students are excited to learn. In our math Department we teach sorting and grouping numbers, matching and pairing, patterns, counting and number recognition. By using similar techniques as our language department we connect our curriculum to the real world and everyday experiences as a way of helping our children's comprehend these concepts.
Nutritional Program
“We ensure that each child is provided a nutritional and balanced diet”
— Rosemary Odada , Founder
What We Do
At the Garden of Hope, our nutritional program provides several meals daily. Our nutritional program originated through our founder Rosemary Odadas's passion for the neighborhood kids who would knock at her door begging for a meal. As time passed the number of children who visited multiplied and the garden of hope we know today was formed. Currently at the garden of hope, our team works to provide multiple meals a day to all of our community members.
Why We Do it
At the Garden of Hope, our mission goes beyond just providing meals. We understand that children can’t learn on an empty stomach. When kids come to us hungry, their ability to focus and engage in their education is severely compromised. Proper nutrition is crucial for cognitive function and overall well-being. By offering several meals a day, we ensure that no child has to face the challenges of learning while hungry. Our commitment is to support every community member's potential by addressing their nutritional needs, so they can thrive both academically and personally.
